As Deputy University Compliance Officer, Steve Sherman helps lead the University of Virginia's institution-wide compliance program. He partners with subject-matter experts and University leadership to assess regulatory risks, strengthen compliance practices, and advance UVA's commitment to ethical conduct and accountability.
Since joining UVA in 2006, Steve has served in a variety of financial strategy and compliance roles, drawing on more than 25 years of professional experience in business and education. Within the Office of Audit & Compliance, he helped establish the University's core compliance infrastructure, including Integrated Risk Assessments, the Compliance Network, the Compliance Matrix, and the Compliance Helpline. His current work focuses on fostering collaboration across compliance areas to address existing and emerging regulatory risk exposure, and on leveraging artificial intelligence in the institutional compliance function.
Steve serves on the UVA Security & General Safety Committee and several other special committees and working groups. Beyond UVA, Steve chairs a consortium of compliance leaders from Ivy+ institutions and regularly collaborates with peers across higher education to share best practices in compliance program design and governance.
Dr. Sherman earned his Doctor of Education from UVA (School of Education and Human Development), his Master of Business Administration from UVA (Darden School of Business), and his undergraduate degree from Duke University.
