The University of Virginia is committed to operating with integrity and in compliance with all applicable federal, state and regulatory requirements.  The University sets expectations of the highest standards of ethical conduct and relies on you to speak up if you believe that you have observed unethical, illegal or suspicious behavior.  The Compliance Helpline serves as a confidential channel for employees (Academic Division or Health System, including UPG) to report or seek guidance on possible compliance issues. 

All University employees should work without fear or without threat of retaliation if they, in good faith (i.e. holding a genuine belief in the truth of one’s allegations), and based on a reasonable belief that improper conduct has occurred, make complaints of improper conduct to University management.  As per the University of Virginia Code of Ethics, "We report all violations of law or University policy, without fear of retaliation for reports made in good faith. We investigate all concerns and determine corrective action. We will cooperate with all investigations into suspected wrongdoing."

WHAT OPTIONS EXIST TO REPORT A COMPLIANCE-RELATED CONCERN?

• Tell your supervisor
• Contact the office responsible for that compliance area
• Alert the Assistant Vice President for Compliance or the Health System Corporate Compliance & Privacy Office
• Submit your report through the University's Compliance Helpline

WHO SHOULD USE THE COMPLIANCE HELPLINE?

University of Virginia employees (Academic Division or Health System, including UPG) should use the Helpline to report any concerns related to possible noncompliance with federal, state, or local laws or regulations, University policies, or errors or irregularities in the University's financial accounting practices or policies (such as in connection with the management of grants or the performance of federal contracts). Such concerns can be raised anonymously and without any fear of retaliation.

WHEN SHOULD I CONTACT THE COMPLIANCE HELPLINE?

Below are some sample compliance concerns and situations that might prompt a Compliance Helpline Report. Such situations may pertain to:

• Fraud and financial improprieties
• Research misconduct
• Conflict of interest
• Disclosure of confidential information
• Inappropriate use of University resources

WHAT TYPES OF INFORMATION WILL I NEED TO SUBMIT A REPORT?

A report submission initiates a formal investigation process. In order to ensure that the University has enough information to conduct a proper investigation, you will be asked to provide the following types of information:

• Type of issue
• Persons involved
• Dates and locations
• Any additional relevant details about the incident

ABOUT THE COMPLIANCE HELPLINE

The UVA Compliance Helpline serves as a confidential channel for employees to report or seek guidance on possible compliance issues.  The webform is secure and encrypted, and the call center is supported by a third party vendor and staffed 24/7 by professionals.  The Compliance Helpline is available to all University of Virginia personnel (Academic Division or Health System, including UPG) and provides both confidentiality and anonymity (if desired).
